History of a Salzburg family company

More than just a hat store

A family business with tradition

For over a century, the name Zapf has stood for craftsmanship, quality, and style. Our roots date back to 1893, when Johann Zapf acquired the "Fichtlhaus" in Werfen, laying the foundation for our success story. From being a k.u.k. (Imperial and Royal) supplier to receiving awards at international exhibitions, Zapf has established itself as a synonym for Austrian craftsmanship.

In a world that is constantly changing, we preserve what makes us who we are: our love for timeless designs, our connection to tradition, and our pursuit of the highest quality. Today, we are proud to pass on these values to future generations - fashion and hats with history, for people who seek the extraordinary.

(Note: k.u.k. stands for "kaiserlich und königlich", which is German for "Imperial and Royal", and refers to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was a title used to describe suppliers and companies that had been appointed to provide goods and services to the imperial family.)

Johann Zapf

The roots of the Zapf family and the company

The roots of the Zapf family date back to the distant past. As early as 1770, Peter Zapf was mentioned in documents as a hat maker in St. Georgen im Attergau. However, it was not until Johann Zapf acquired the "Fichtlhaus" in Werfen in 1893 that the history of the company as we know it today began. With handmade hats of the highest quality and a love for detail, he laid the foundation for a brand that would soon become known far beyond the borders of Salzburg.

Zapf enjoyed great reputation and was appointed as a k.u.k. (Imperial and Royal) supplier in 1905, one of the highest honors in the monarchy at the time. However, difficult times also arose. The First and Second World Wars brought challenges that tested not only the people but also the company. Despite material shortages and economic uncertainties, the Zapf family preserved their passion for craftsmanship and managed to maintain the tradition over generations.

In 1950, a new era began with extensive renovations and the continuation of the company under the leadership of Hans Zapf. Under his guidance, Zapf developed into a prominent figure in the Austrian hat-making guild. With the introduction of the "Collection Habsburg" in 1991 and the state award in 1998, the company became known as a synonym for quality and tradition far beyond Austria's borders.

This text provides a detailed history of the Zapf family and their company, highlighting key events and milestones that have shaped the brand into what it is today. It showcases the family's dedication to their craft and their ability to adapt to changing times while maintaining their traditions and values.

Johanna Aschbacher

Over time, the Zapf stores in Salzburg, Golling, and Werfen were closed, and the location in Bad Gastein has established itself today as the heart of the company. Here, the tradition continues, and here the history of the Zapf family connects with the present. The store in Bad Gastein is today the central place where the values of the house - quality, style awareness, and passion - are made tangible for all customers.

Johanna Aschbacher, née Zapf, now runs the business in Bad Gastein with a clear vision for the future. She combines the values of her ancestors - craftsmanship, quality, and style - with modern demands and a sense of timeless elegance. The connection between past and present makes Zapf a place where tradition remains alive and people of all ages can find themselves.
